About seven years ago I got a call at my Los Angeles office from a group of illegal immigrants living in Detroit. They wanted to know what I could do to help them normalize their status in the United States or immigrate to Canada. They invited me to their city to meet with them.
I knew that they were among some 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States. Frankly, I did not have much sympathy for them. I told my Detroit callers. I would only come if they paid my airfare, hotel bill and a per person retainer for meeting them. I thought this would put the matter to rest.
