Interpol Puts Yanukovych On International Wanted List

Interpol has put Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine's former president, on its list of internationally wanted persons.

An online version of Interpol red notice list says Yanukovych is wanted for "misappropriation, embezzlement or conversion of property by malversation" committed in an "especially gross amount, or by an organized group."

Yanukovych fled to Russia in February 2014 after months of street protests in Kyiv against his rejection of trade and integration deal with the European Union.

Authorities in Kyiv say his appearance on Interpol's empowers any police force to hand him over to Ukraine if he is detained.

Ukraine's Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said on January 12 that former Prime Minister Mykola Azarov and the former president's son, Oleksandr Yanukovych, also have been added to the Interpol list along with several other former top officials of Yanukovych's government.

However, their names were not immediately posted online list.

Based on reporting by Interfax, AP, AFP and Reuters

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
